the index becomes the deliverable

At sufficient volume the bottleneck stops being production and becomes retrieval. Hundreds of outputs had accumulated across lanes, each in whatever shape its producing lane needed, which is correct for the producer and close to useless to anyone else. The record was complete, and nobody could find anything in it.

The fix was structural rather than textual. Results were reorganised by scope instead of by producer, and a single entry pointer was added so that a reader arriving without context has exactly one place to start. Neither change adds a result. Both change what the existing results are worth to somebody who was not present when they were made.

The most telling part is that the tidying was scheduled like any other work. Curatorial tasks were queued on the board, assigned and closed, rather than left as an intention for the end of the run. The operation treated sorting its own output as a first-class unit of effort, using the same machinery as the work being sorted.

The tension is that reorganising rewrites what other lanes believe about where things are, and every lane is mid-flight when it happens. Deferring means doing it later against more material and colder context; doing it early means doing it against less. The chosen point is where findability first becomes the binding constraint.

Cost: a migration of meaning for every location anyone had memorised, plus a front door that now has to stay accurate as the archive keeps growing. What it proves is that the operation can treat its own accumulated output as a product with a user, and maintain it while it is still being written.
