the label that continues a thread

One of the labels reconciled in this record is shaped as a continuation of another: same family, same numbering, plus a suffix. It is synchronised alongside everything else as an ordinary lane, given no special treatment and no extra ceremony. What is unusual is only the naming.

The naming carries a decision. When a line of inquiry outgrows its slot, because the useful next question is no longer the question the slot was opened for, there are two ways forward. Open a fresh label with no relation to the old one, which is what most operations do, and the connection between the two questions then exists only in whoever made the call. Or continue the same name, which keeps the lineage visible: a reader who meets both labels can see that one is downstream of the other without being told.

The cost runs the other way. A long-lived label with a suffix explains nothing about what actually changed, so the record stays connected and gets vaguer at the same time. The convention also lives outside the record: the shape of a label implies a story that no entry spells out, which means a reader has to arrive already knowing the habit. And a taxonomy like this has to be maintained by whoever understood why the split happened.

What it proves is that carrying an open thread was treated as a naming decision, made once and written where it can be read, rather than as a piece of history left to be remembered by the person who made the call.
